Agra was the seat of the Mughal empire at its height. The marble domes of the Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan for Mumtaz Mahal, sit alongside the red sandstone ramparts of Agra Fort. A short drive away, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's short-lived capital, stands remarkably preserved after being abandoned barely a decade after it was built.
